Irvine SAT Tutoring Writing and Language Questions Solving the Hardest OFFICIAL SAT Writing and Language Questions (Practice Test 1) Solving the Hardest OFFICIAL SAT Writing and Language Questions (Practice Test 1) All SAT practice questions are not created equal.   Not only do they vary vastly in difficulty from question to question (as you may already know), but they also differ in quality from test maker to test maker.   In other words, different practice tests from different companies may vary wildly in how effective they actually are in preparing you for the SAT. From years of SAT tutoring and teaching experience, I’ve found that the majority of third-party test preparation cannot be trusted to give consistently high-quality questions and tests (book your private Irvine tutor today).   Questions can be too easy, too hard, on material that is not covered on the SAT, have answer choices that SAT writers would not choose, or simply have wrong or ambiguous answers.   This can be daunting when trying to decide which practice tests or books to buy, but luckily there is a simple solution: use the official practice tests. This brings us to this series.   Here, I will be cherry-picking only the most difficult questions from the official SAT practice tests to show and solve.   These questions have been chosen based on my experience using these tests with many students and observing which questions were the most difficult or most likely to be answered incorrectly.   They will be compiled here on posts to this blog so that you can choose to do some of only the hardest and official SAT practice questions to help prepare you for getting a top score on the actual SAT without wasting a lot of time-solving easier problems. A generalized property is more general and it allows for any conditions of the body or individual to be applied to different aspects. For example, a piece of information about the human body can be held to be general by saying that one person's body contains X number of elements with Y other properties.However, the most common example of a property is the carbon atom or group of atoms that are arranged into four groups. They are hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and the carbon monoxide.The extensive property is usually found with more complex chemical compounds or systems. Chemists are able to classify properties of molecules themselves.When it comes to chemistry, the term 'extensive property' is found in a chemical formula or equation. This is where the two-letter name of the group of atoms is substituted for their atomic mass. The equation in a chemical formula is also known as the symbol. It describes how the gas or solvent reacts with the molecule.Chemists use it to describe all the properties of the molecule in their chemistry experiments. This is because the equation can be expressed as a rate constant and then it is the laws of thermodynamics that calculate the reaction between the molecules.The analysis part of a chemical formula will always take the place of the ionization one or the oxidation one. Check out her review of her alma mater: VT:Describe the campus setting and transportation options. How urban or safe is the campus? Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Patrice: Saint Louis University (SLU) is a medium-sized campus in an urban area. Its a very beautiful campus. When it is warm out, there are tons of people hanging out in the quad, relaxing. Often there are events going on outside through campus. Because it is in an urban area, there are safety concerns and incidents do happen. However, many incidents can be prevented by being safe and smart. Examples are calling an escort to walk or drive you from one part of campus to another when it is dark outside and traveling in groups at night. A bike or car is not necessary but they are helpful. Most people can walk from one end of campus to another within 10-15 minutes. There is a shuttle that takes people from the main campus to the medical campus. Also, the campus does provide transportation services over the weekend to shuttle people to the mall, grocery store, Wal-Mart, and Target. Public transportation stops for the bus and train are also near campus. VT:How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Patrice: All of my professors and TAs had regularly scheduled office hours. If their hours did not fit within my schedule and I needed to meet with them, it was easy to set up an appointment. All of my professors were open to meeting with students and were usually prompt when responding to emails. I never had any issues meeting with academic advisers. However, I did only meet with them when necessary. They do get busy during certain parts of the semester and it may be difficult to meet with them then, but my advisers were great with squeezing me in. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Patrice: The living arrangements vary on campus. There are traditional freshman dorms which consist of two people to a room with community bathrooms. There was also another option for freshmen which consisted of 3-4 people to a room with a private bathroom in each room. The upperclassmen housing ranged from typical dorm rooms, suites (where two rooms are connected by a bathroom), and on-campus apartments. There are a variety of dining options. There are cafeterias in the freshman dorms, the student center, library, and other buildings and dorms. I did enjoy the variety of dining options as an upperclassman. However, I felt that the options in the smaller freshman dorms werent always vegetarian friendly. The chefs and managers do often ask for feedback and there is also a vegetarian-only restaurant on campus. The weekend options on campus are very limited. It was very easy to socialize and make friends. I lived on a floor where many of the students had the same majors and were often in the same classes. Additionally, during the first week of freshman year, there are a ton of activities on campus and by the RAs to help everyone get to know each other. I also met many people who received the same scholarship as I did because of the requirements that often brought us together. During the beginning of the year, there is a large Activities Fair in the quad. There, clubs and organizations set up booths so people can learn about the different organizations on campus and get involved. Clubs are a great way to make new friends. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Patrice: In my opinion, many students studied Health Care or Business. A lot of students at SLU are pre-med, Nursing, Physical Therapy, or Business. I was a Biochemistry major enrolled as pre-med. With so many students enrolled as pre-med, there is an office dedicated to helping those students. There are advisors who are helpful and some resources there as well. However, most pre-med students have to be proactive and become familiar with the advisors there. I chose Biochemistry because I fell in love with chemistry in high school and I thought it would be a good back-up plan if I chose not to go into medicine. The Chemistry department is a fairly small department, which makes it easy to get to know the professors and peers. There are also ample opportunities to do research within the department or become a TA or grading assistant for the large Chemistry lectures. The head of the department also sends out job opportunities and internships opportunities from local companies that recrui t Chemistry students. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Patrice: I found that it was pretty easy to make friends and overall, people on campus are very friendly. I did not choose to get involved in Greek life but there were a number of sororities and fraternities on campus and I would often see them fundraising on campus, volunteering, and going to Greek events. One does not have to become a member of Greek life to make friends but it is a good opportunity to make friends and build strong bonds with other members. VT: How helpful is the Career Center and other student support services? Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Patrice: The Career Center is helpful. They offer help with interviewing and resume writing. This is a very good resource for students applying to graduate or professional schools and for people who are looking to intern or begin their careers. They also have a website so you can find jobs on campus. When you sign up for the website, one of the representatives will look at your resume and approve it or offer help to strengthen it before you begin applying to jobs. Additionally, there are a number of career fairs and graduate school fairs that allow companies to recruit on campus. VT: How are the various study areas such as libraries, student union, and dorm lounges?Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Patrice: There are a number of study spaces available. The library is spacious and has been recently renovated. I have often found rooms to study in in the student center, study rooms in dorms, and other classroom buildings. While there is ample space to study, it becomes very difficult to find space during finals and mid-terms. The library is open 24 hours and the student center has extended hours during mid-terms and finals. During those times, my friends and I have relied on each other to find a quiet space for us to study. It was very helpful to have others secure a place to study. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between? To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Patrice: Because it is in a city, there are a number of things to do that are fun. Making friends and going out with them to explore the city is a memorable part of my undergraduate years. The Delmar Loop is a great place for people to hang out, eat, and visit local shops. There are a number of attractions like the Gateway Arch, City Museum, the Zoo, and Art Museums all of which are very affordable. I attended a number of concerts. Our campus has an arena where touring artists perform and sometimes there are discounted or even free tickets for students. The Fox Theater is also within walking distance of the campus. The theater houses a number of musicals and performing artists as well. There are a number of neighborhoods, such as Soulard and Lacledes Landing, where students go for nightlife. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Patrice: SLU is a medium sized school. I was pleased overall with the class sizes. I had a few larger lecture classes such as General Biology and History. However, with History, there are smaller courses offered. With the larger lecture, 2 lectures in a week were in the large lecture hall and the third lecture day in the week happened in a smaller class with a TA. Because I was a Biochemistry major, my Chemistry classes were about 30-40 people versus 200-300 in the normal Chemistry lectures. I also felt labs were appropriately sized so that the TA could effectively assist everyone. Classes such as Math, Theology, Philosophy, and English usually ranged from 20-50 people. My Foreign Language classes, Piano, Dance, and jewelry-making class had no more than 12 people. With those classes, a lot of one-on-one is needed with the teachers and because they were so small, it was very easy to talk to the professors. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one you regret the most.Patrice:One of the classes that I took really stands out in my memory - Jewelry-making and Metalsmithing. I learned a lot and the class allowed me to be very expressive and work on problem solving in a hands-on manner. I was able to create things I never knew I could. Introvert Whisperer / A few things to know about Sexual Harassment - Introvert Whisperer A few things to know about Sexual Harassment I got into a fairly lengthy discussion with a 30+-year-old male friend yesterday.   It started because of learning that Matt Lauer (Today Show anchor) was fired for “inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace”. I appreciated his candor as he acknowledged that he really didn’t know what any of this meant as he personally had never witnessed what he thought was sexual harassment.   Like many people, he was left wondering if some woman was making it up or “mis-reading” an interaction with a co-worker. This issue is very real and you don’t have to go too far to find a woman who hasn’t had to put up with it at least once in their life.  I have had numerous “events” of this nature throughout my career so I know it’s very real. Most of them were repulsive but one was bad enough I’ve barely ever told anyone. This behavior also occurs with men but less frequently. First, I would like to say that I do know that there are people who have made up false accusations and are poor at reading social interactions.   I’m sure that some of what you’ve heard includes some of those people.   But like every social problem we have, you can’t disregard the problem because a few people have made false claims. What is sexual harassment? Just so we’re all on the same page, here is what the EEOC defines: It is unlawful to harass a person (an applicant or employee) because of that person’s sex. Harassment can include “sexual harassment” or unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical harassment of a sexual nature. Harassment does not have to be of a sexual nature, however, and can include offensive remarks about a person’s sex. For example, it is illegal to harass a woman by making offensive comments about women in general. Both victim and the harasser can be either a woman or a man, and the victim and harasser can be the same sex. Although the law doesn’t prohibit simple teasing, offhand comments, or isolated incidents that are not very serious, harassment is illegal when it is so frequent or severe that it creates a hostile or offensive work environment or when it results in an adverse employment decision (such as the victim being fired or demoted). The harasser can be the victims supervisor, a supervisor in another area, a co-worker, or someone who is not an employee of the employer, such as a client or customer. This is also the type of thing that is hard to prove and as a result, most people don’t do or say anything.   Keep in mind that when this sort of thing happens with a boss or a person of power (think Bill Cosby or Matt Lauer) the recipient of the harassment often feels powerless to push back verbally much less ask for an intervention by a company or authorities for fear of the repercussions.   It’s the perfect crime if you think about it because the bad behavior essentially gets reinforced due to lack of punishment or accountability.   Getting by with bad behavior signals success, which for a person of power can be a heady experience. No wonder you hear of people inflicting years of abuse. Why am I discussing this?   Because my mission is to do everything I can to help you love the work you do.   This is the sort of thing that can cause you to hate your job, lose your personal power and reroute your life.   Don’t inflict this on others and don’t accept it. If you are the recipient of sexual harassment, minimally you should speak up and let the offender know that it’s not ok to do or say the things they are doing.   We teach people how to treat us and if you don’t stand up for yourself you are reinforcing bad behavior, which means it will persist.   There are full-blown classes on this so I won’t get into a full course of action but my main message is to think through what would you do if it happened to you. She is a 2011 graduate of Baylor University with a Bachelors degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Check out her review of her alma mater: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options.How urban or safe is the campus?Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Kat: The campus is safe, and its like a city within itself. There are buses you can take around campus, but I personally never used them. A lot of students walk or ride bikes across campus, and a car is only needed if you live off of campus or if you wanted to go to the movie theater. VT:How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Kat: The professors, advisers, and teaching assistants are always willing to find time to help. They typically have certain hours that they are available, but if you have class or duties during those hours, they will work with you to find an alternate time and schedule an appointment. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Kat: I did not have a good experience with dorm life, so I lived off-campus for most of my college life. You are required to live on campus your first year; afterwards, I highly recommend getting off campus if you can afford it. This is the only area of Baylor I have anything negative to say about. The dining options are good, but may be a bit limited for some. There is a Chilis Too in the Engineering building. There is also a small snack stand in the science building. There are three dining halls; one has a really awesome omelet bar, another has a great stir-fry bar, and the last one occasionally has fantastic chili cheese fries (and I am a person who normally does not enjoy chili cheese fries). There is also a little collection of fast food places within the student union building. It includes Chick-fil-A, Sbarro, Quiznos, and a tex-mex place. There are no Chinese restaurants that deliver to Baylor, but there is a Pizza Hut right on the edge of campus that does deliver to campus. There are also several social events throughout the year. Every week, there is a Dr. Pepper Hour in which students get free Dr. Pepper floats and socialize. The student union building has a pool hall and a bowling alley in the basement. Every school within the university hosts different events. The Engineering school has an event during which different organizations like ASME and IEEE put on little shows or contests. One example is professors and teaching assistants trying to find Skittles within a whipped cream pie. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Kat: I studied Electrical and Computer Engineering. I have always enjoyed mathematics and science, especially the electricity side of physics. I was also in the Baylor Interdisciplinary Core (BIC). Both were well represented and supported. They also required a separate application from the admissions application for Baylor. Thus, I actually had three different applications that I filled out for Baylor: one to be a student at the university, one for the Engineering school, and one for the Baylor Interdisciplinary Core program. I do not know the acceptance rate for the Engineering school, but I do know that BIC only accepts 200 to 250 students each year into the program. Both the Engineering school and the BIC program had teachers and administrators that were very supportive of the students and the goals of those students. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Kat: The first week after moving in, before starting school, is all about meeting people, making friends, and learning about Baylor. For the first week of school as a freshman, a decent number of classes did not go diving into the subject material. They spent a day or two having the professor and students introduce themselves. There were a lot of events during the first week to encourage students to meet and mingle. I was not a part of the Greek life and did not see it play a significant role in campus life. There are others who would disagree with that statement. I just did not experience it, and it was not a significant part in the events I attended. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Kat: The Career Center is helpful for putting together a resume. There are a number of companies that recruit on campus and at the Baylor career fairs. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Kat: The study areas were nice. There was typically room, and they were easy to get to. The libraries had study rooms you could reserve. These were great for study groups or when I tutored others. They had dry erase boards you could use, if you brought your own markers and eraser. I used these rooms on numerous occasions. The student union building would have available space, except around lunch. The lounge area and the table area were packed then. Otherwise, there was usually plenty of room, and the chairs were comfortable. I would study there in-between classes often. The dorm lounges were roomy and sometimes students would get together for a TV-watching party. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Kat: There were some restaurants and fast food places right around campus. There was also one movie theater, but it required having a car or a ride to get there. Most students stay on campus because there is not a lot to do off-campus. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Kat: The student body is fairly large. All of my classes were six to 40 people each (not including Chapel, which was a few hundred people), and the average was around 15 to 20. I liked the size of my classes. The science classes were the only ones to reach around 40 students. The BIC classes were 15 to 20 when in small group, and they were around 250 for large group. The small group BIC classes were for discussion, homework, quizzes, and tests. The large group BIC classes were for lectures. The Engineering classes varied from six people to 25 people. The electives were on the lower end of the range because professors wanted to be able to devote more time to each individual student. The required classes were on the higher end of the range, but they never reached the magnitude of the science classes. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Kat: I really enjoyed and loved many of my classes. The most memorable experience for me was not tied to a specific class, but rather to how professors/students reacted to a situation. Fall semester of my spring year, my family was going through a hard time that ended with the funeral of my brothers first-born child. She was a micro-preemie on life support. I was walking into class when I got the call about how my brother and his wife were going to take her off of life support. I walked into my lab, and I did not have to say anything. My lab partner saw the look on my face (I had been keeping him up to date on everything going on back home), and he just told me to go. He said he would handle the lab and catch me up next week. In addition to lab, which was my last class that day, I missed three full days of class that week, as well as a quiz. I had emailed in all the homework I could, and I informed my professors of the situation and that some of the homework would be turned in late t he following week when I got back. None of the professors docked my homework for being late. In one of my classes, I had a quiz every Friday, and we were allowed one dropped quiz. When I emailed him, I told him I would take the quiz I missed as the dropped quiz. When I got back to school the following Monday, he pulled me aside and told me to not worry about the quiz. The quiz was missed for legitimate reasons and it would not count toward my total. Thus, I still had a dropped quiz to use afterward. I told him he did not need to do that, but I was very thankful. The professors and the students were supportive and worked with me to get things done at another time. They all understood that I did not miss class for a party or because I did not feel well.
